Amid bombed-out streets and collapsing infrastructure, one young woman is defying fear and danger. Krystina Drahomaretska runs a shelter in Ukraine called Under the Sun, where she cares for over 250 dogs rescued from war zones, abandoned buildings, and abusive situations.

But rescue is only the beginning.

The dogs Krystina rescues often need extensive medical care to treat their wounds, malnutrition, and disease. They need vaccines to ensure distemper, parvovirus, and other deadly contagions don't spread at Under the Sun. Dogs who have been terrorized by war frequently need specialized behavioral training to rehabilitate them.   

And that doesn't even begin to account for the basics: food, heat, shelter, employees.
