For beekeepers, the crisis is now about survival.
While many have moved their hives out of immediate danger, the fires have destroyed the plants bees rely on for food. Combined with ongoing drought, nectar and pollen are in short supply, leaving colonies at risk of starvation in a matter of days.
Smoke exposure is also damaging honey stores and disrupting bees’ natural defenses, increasing the risk of colony loss.
